The essential tool for the traditional preparation of matcha.
The chasen (茶筅) is a traditional Japanese matcha whisk, carefully formed from a single piece of bamboo. Its approximately 100 fine tines are designed to whisk matcha and water together quickly and evenly, helping create the smooth texture and delicate layer of foam characteristic of a well-prepared bowl of matcha.
Unlike a metal kitchen whisk, the fine bamboo tines are shaped specifically for matcha preparation, allowing you to whisk briskly while being gentle on your matcha bowl.
Choose Your Bamboo
-
Traditional Bamboo (width: 5.5 cm or 2.2 inches; height: 11.2 cm or 4.5 inches)
The timeless natural bamboo chasen, with the warm, understated appearance traditionally associated with everyday matcha preparation.
-
Purple Bamboo (width: 5.5 cm or 2.2 inches; height: 11.2 cm or 4.5 inches)
Crafted from naturally darker-toned bamboo, this chasen offers the same traditional form and function with a deeper, distinctive appearance. A beautiful choice for a matcha setup featuring darker woods, ceramics, or earthy tones.
How to Use
Before whisking, soak the tines briefly in warm water to soften the bamboo and help improve flexibility.
Sift your matcha into a chawan (matcha bowl), add water at the appropriate temperature, and whisk briskly from the wrist using a quick W- or M-shaped motion rather than stirring in circles. Continue until the matcha is evenly suspended and, when preparing usucha, a fine layer of foam develops across the surface.
Care for Your Chasen
After each use, rinse gently with clean water. Avoid using soap, which can be difficult to rinse completely from the fine bamboo tines.
Shake off excess water and allow the whisk to air-dry completely in a well-ventilated area. A chasen holder can help the whisk maintain its shape as it dries.
Because a chasen is made from natural bamboo, slight variations in color, grain, tine shape, and appearance are normal. With repeated use, the bamboo will naturally show signs of wear. Replace your whisk when the tines become significantly broken, frayed, or lose their effectiveness.
